Introducing

Being an artist, or training to be an artist (let’s be real here), takes time and energy. But it takes at least one more thing: ‘inspiration’. For me, it is more than inspiration; it is about making connections to the world around me. And by world, I mean the ‘scapes’ where I walk, see, feel and hear. So far, I’ve only recorded two connections in my new ‘Nature Journal‘ section within this website. I won’t do regular posts, as I hope to make these connections weekly, but I will bundle a month’s worth and try to share what I took from these trips to use in my art. For today, I’ll include the end of November and the start of December.

First steps

So far, we’ve been to:

  • The Wombat Moor – a track in an alpine environment with rocky and muddy terrain 30/11/25
  • The South Wellington Track – sub-alpine with rocky and rugged terrain 7/12/25

Both of these regions are quite stark but beautiful in their own ways.

For Art Sake

I may not paint, write or draw any of these, but it is the ideas that I’m trying to generate.

  • Wombat Moor – Mosaic Moorland – the moors (cool names)
  • Rugged and stark terrains (I quite like these)
  • Tough bushes with pretty tiny flowers (existing in impossible conditions)
  • Dying trees, jagged rock horizons and rocky tracks (a sense of fragility of life and being)
  • Amazing cloud formations (very important in landscape paintings)
  • Brisk winds, snow and sounds of nature (how to capture these? Think of movement)
