Not another gesso post!

There are so many YouTube videos out there that I decided to rely on an ‘old-fashioned’ way of presenting information. Words (and pictures later on). You are free to download. You don’t need to sign up to get it!

There are no recommendations as yet since I’m just starting out, but to be honest, I say either try the products yourself, watch videos or look at reviews. Also, I’m in Australia, so you may not recognise the product companies.

Important

My only input here is to that remember that how a product performs is also reliant on external factors such as:

  • temperature
  • humidity
  • light and
  • other conditions, such as air quality.

It will also depend on:

  • how heavy-handed or light-handed you are
  • if your setup is comfortable (bending too low may mean a change in application pressure)
  • reason for applying gesso
  • What style of artwork are you are doing – desired outcomes i.e. smooth vs textured
  • how thick your gesso is, and
  • what tools you use (rollers, foam or bristle brushes)

Finally

You can buy canvas or board that has been prepared with gesso, but I just ask that you consider what the ‘end goal’ is of your artwork (sales, exhibition, practice, longevity). And depending on the quality of what you buy, spending a bit more time preparing your surface may be worth it.

Oh, and you might want to wear gloves.

That’s it.

Have fun!
