Intensity.
I’m running out of time for Halloween, but I wanted to do the Baroque Art Movement first.
“The Baroque art movement is characterised by its emotional intensity, dramatic use of light, grandeur, and a focus on movement, often reflecting the tumultuous political and religious climate of the 17th century.” Thank you, Copilot Search. Because I liked the dark paintings with dramatic lighting in my image search, I decided to do this for my project.
Realising I’ve been lazy in previous posts, here are the laws and rules that I began with.
The Laws.
- An artist may not ruin (making mistakes is an exception, of course – we learn the most through our mistakes) a surface being or, through inaction, allow a surface being to come to harm.
- An artist must obey the call given to them by the creative muses except where such a call would conflict with the First Law.
- An artist must protect their existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
The Rules.
- I must use a single picture I have created, taken from a photo or scene of my work. The work was created on an iPad using Procreate (an excellent software program developed by Tasmanians), drawing from a photo taken in my backyard.
- I will apply this image to all the art movements.
- I may alter only the colour of the image to suit an art movement.
- I may deconstruct the image to meet the requirements of an art movement, but all elements of my image must be represented.
- Unwritten rule for anything I can’t think of at this point.
The image I chose was of the plant ‘Indian Shot’, which I thought was a weed in Tasmania. The Canna Indica is, in fact, not a weed growing in my backyard but quite an interesting looking plant.
The Technique.
Instead of wanting to mimic ‘everything’ from every single period (which was quite impossible), I now pretty much use my iPad and Procreate software.
One thing I’ve realised is that I’m not recording what tools I’m using. I can easily add a new layer in Procreate and record what brushes I’m using, etc. It wasn’t until I noticed something I really liked from months ago and had no idea how I achieved the texture! Good grief, what a rookie mistake, and I’m no longer a rookie, so no excuse.

The Why.
So, why did I begin to explore the Art Movements? It was because I was trying to find my style. That elusive ‘thing’ is how artists distinguish themselves from others. Thankfully, I am narrowing down my preferences and have found that ‘Painting with the old guy’ helped me.

See you – hopefully for Halloween!
